Are YOU smarter than a 5th grader?

Last night while folding laundry, I turned on the TV for some background noise while I folded, sorted, and organized my wears. TV comes on. Apparently I fell asleep to the FOX network the night before.

There is Jeff Foxworthy. A formerly funny comedian (seriously, Rednecks may be funny, but when that’s all you got, they stop being funny, and that is just sad). Mr. Foxworthy is sporting a nice sports jacket and some “make-me-look-smart” glasses.

Jeff Foxworthy is the host of Fox’s new game show: Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader. The premise being that there are 10 questions, 2 questions graded from 1st to 5th grades. There are 5 fifth grader “classmates.” The contestant and the classmate take the quiz. Each correct answer gets the contestant more money (kind of like Weakest Link, but you are playing with a 5th grader). You have three “cheats:” You can peak at the 5th graders paper, you can copy the 5th graders paper, or the 5th grader can save you once (you get the question wrong, the 5th grader gets it right, you move on to the next money level.

So many things wrong with this I am not sure where to start, but here I go:

• This is a horrible commentary on the educational institution in this country. Every single politician, superintendent, teacher, and parent should see this show, and see how dumb Americans really are. I hate to say it, but this show either picks stupid people, or stupid people choose to be on it, but either way, if Fox is transmitted to other countries, we have one more feather in our Laughing-Stock Cap.

The first episode I watched had a male contestant. He was a graduate of UCLA and UCLA Law School. He used all three cheats on the first 3 questions, and left with $0. He couldn’t get 1 question right on his own. Not sure I want this guy as my lawyer.

• Jeff Foxworthy as a game show host? Really? This is a guy who makes trailer home jokes, is he really qualified to host a game show? We’ll they are dumb adults…

• These people know the world is laughing at them, right? I mean they have to. They are going on a game show with a chance to win $1,000,000 and they can’t answer questions being taught to 6-11 year old children. The kids answer quickly, and correctly. Maybe they should get the money if the adult doesn’t. Why would you play this game if there was a chance you couldn’t win.

So next Thursday, I will be tuning in. Playing along. And at least feeling good about myself by knowing that I am smarter than the people who can get themselves on TV, and 5th Graders.
